2nd Grade
The 2nd grade class at Awakening Seed School is productive, playful, creative, and community oriented. The curriculum is approached with hands-on experiences and authentic assignments that make learning meaningful and rich. Language arts activities are designed to promote independent writers and readers. Literature studies introduce students to authors and books that stretch their thinking, interactions, and dialogue with others. Math and science are active subjects that include critical thinking and the application of information to “show what we know.” Computation skills develop in this class, as students review addition and subtraction, and are introduced to multiplication and division. Beginning self-organization skills are established as students learn how to set goals and reflect on their weekly progress. Writing skills develop in various genres through writing across the curriculum. The fine arts are also a big part of life in the 2nd grade class. Finally, students also grow as humanitarians through weekly reading time with preschool buddies and visits to a nearby nursing home. Students receive weekly instruction in Spanish, music, and P. E. and attend 5 full days.
