An Awakening Seed year is filled with events that build the school’s strong sense of community. Some events include most Seed families, and others are more specific to a group of parents or classrooms. Alumni and friends are invited to a number of the events, especially the Halloween Carnival and Celebration of the Winter Solstice.
The open house is held on the Monday before school begins each August. It runs from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. It is an opportunity for the children and parents to see their classroom and meet the teachers and classmates. Some families come for the entire time and others just drop in for a short visit. Generally, it is a busy time for the teachers, so any matters that need more extensive attention should be discussed at an alternative time. At the Open House you will have an opportunity to have general questions answered, sign up for committees, purchase a t-shirt, and meet the APA coordinators.
Curriculum Week is held in mid-September to give parents a chance to experience some of the work going on in the classrooms. Teachers, children, and parents from each class will gather one evening during this week to experience classroom life together. Curriculum Week will be scheduled during the week of September 8 to 10 to accommodate staff schedules and families with multiple children enrolled at the Seed. Children attend this event along with their parents and participate in the classroom demonstrations and activities, with the exception of the toddler classes. Specific dates and times for Curriculum Week will be announced once school begins.
Tye Dye and Tile Painting
Tye Dye and Tile Painting is a chance to add that special unique touch to your newly purchased white Seed T-shirt, as well as paint a tile to go on the front of the building. Held on the Thursday before the teacher work day in September, everyone pays a minimal fee to cover the cost of the dyes, which are applied to the shirts at school and then taken home in a plastic bag to wash out the next morning. Instructions for how to tie the shirts are provided ahead of time. If you want to paint a tile, the cost is $25 each. The proceeds go into the APA general fund and are used around the school for classroom and program needs.
The Halloween Carnival is the Seed’s major fundraising event, coordinated by the APA each year, and produced with the help of many, many parent volunteers. The carnival was originally developed as a fun alternative to Halloween in the 1980s and has evolved into a large event which current families and friends, neighbors, and Seed alumni attend. The carnival is not held on Halloween night anymore, and is usually the last Friday evening before Halloween. Included in the event are a raffle, silent auction, food, games, a photographer, a bounce house or slide, and the Mystery Theater. The Mystery Theater is an annual play produced by some of the staff, alumni, and parents, with a bit of humor for everyone. Tickets are sold to the three different evening performances and all proceeds from the Mystery Theater go toward the faculty retirement fund. All funds generated by the raffle and silent auction go to the Seed scholarship fund.
Thanksgiving Food Drive
Each early November the Seed holds a canned food drive as part of our Thanksgiving season. All of the food goes to the Tanner Chapel Food Pantry, which serves needy families and many homeless individuals in the downtown area.
All-School Thanksgiving Feast
The all-school Thanksgiving feast is held outside on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving at lunchtime. All classes participate by preparing part of the meal, which typically includes green beans, mashed potatoes, applesauce, cheese crisps or pizza, cut vegetables, cookies, and fruit salad. We begin the feast by gathering in the multipurpose room to sing and remember what we’re thankful for, and then move outside to eat. Some parents help with the preparations and serving and then join us for the feast.
Winter Solstice Celebration
The Winter Solstice Celebration is one of the favorite and most memorable Seed events. Generally held the last Friday evening before the winter holiday break, it is an evening of dancing and singing by the Seed children. We work with a unifying theme or story and each class develops a dance as their contribution. The celebration is held at Fees Preparatory Middle School in Tempe. Don’t miss this spectacular, heartwarming event! The after school program ends at 4 p.m. on the day of the Solstice Celebration.
Love & Logic Parenting Workshops
This is a series of workshops offered free of charge to all Seed parents interested in learning more about this excellent program. Taught by Seed staff, the workshops give parents a chance to learn about the Seed’s approach to guidance and discipline, and at the same time learn how to make parenting a more pleasant experience. APA funds were used to purchase the training materials.
Valentine Card and Craft Sale
The Valentine Card and Craft Sales is held before Valentine’s Day each year to raise money for the outdoor education programs at the Seed. A wide selection of handmade cards, valentines, crafts, and baked goods make this a sweet and beneficial three-day Seed event. The committee helps with assembling cards, sales, and pricing baked goods.
Scholastic Book Fair
The Book Fair is a week long event that enables parents to purchase quality books for their children and at the same time help the teachers to build up classroom libraries and purchase equipment for classes. In addition to the book sale, we have a read-in where all of the kids in the school read for a half hour together, and an evening event on Thursday. Children attend the event with their parents for an evening of storytelling, art activities, and special drawings with prizes. The book fair is open before and after school and at lunchtime. The committee is in charge of assisting in the planning of the setup, decorations, supervision of money collection, events, and tear down of the book fair.
The School Picnic is held in the spring at the Seed on a Saturday afternoon. The picnic is organized by the staff and APA. It includes a delicious potluck lunch, games, music, sometimes tile painting (for those who didn’t get to do it in the fall), and a chance to check out various elements of the outdoor environment. Former Seed families are always welcome and everyone enjoys this relaxing and casual time on the Seed playground. The committee is in charge of setup, clean-up, and assisting the staff or APA in any games or events on the day of the picnic.
Seed Art Silent Auction
The Seed Art Silent Auction is held in April and features artwork created by Seed children and staff. Classrooms contribute a designated number of pieces of artwork for the event made collectively by each group. The final day of the silent auction coincides with the Spring Picnic. Committee members will be in charge of collecting the art and coordinating the silent auction with the staff, as well as assisting on the final day of the auction.
Awards and Graduation
Awards and Graduation occur on the last Wednesday of the regular school year. Each class has a separate awards ceremony where children, teachers and volunteers are individually honored for their efforts and achievements of the year. It is one of the most touching and memorable Seed days. Following the afternoon awards in the older classes, graduation for the 3rd and 4th graders is held in the multipurpose room. All students and parents are invited to attend this final event honoring our graduates.
Birthdays at the Seed
Birthdays are a joyful part of the Seed experience. We ask that you honor the wholesome foods policy for holidays and birthdays as well. Please check with your child’s teacher for individual classroom birthday policies and preferences.
End of the Year Family Party
The end of year family party is held at the Seed from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, the last day of the regular school year. It includes a potluck dinner, water slides, sand and water play, and other water-related activities. This is the last official day of school. There is no after school care on this day and children must be picked up by 3:15 p.m. The committee helps with setting up the potluck and clean-up.
