Different Types of Schools

Preschools:

  • faith-based – privately funded school affiliated with a religious organization or church
  • independent – privately funded school not affiliated with any other organization
  • language immersion – school with dual language emphasis
  • nature-based – emphasis on interaction with outdoor environment
  • lab school – school established for pre-service teacher training, within a university setting
  • play-based – curriculum through which significant learning comes through play
  • private nonprofit – privately funded, governed by a board, 501(c)(3) status, can receive donations
  • private for profit – national chains, profit-seeking business model

Elementary Schools:

  • public – tuition-free school funded by the state
  • charter – alternative school funded by the government, sometimes privately owned and independent of public school system in which it is located

What to Look for When Choosing a School

  • happy, engaged children and teachers
  • inviting, well-equipped classrooms and outdoor spaces
  • evidence of excitement for learning with examples of student work on display
  • balanced standards-based curriculum (academic, social-emotional, creative, physical)
  • discipline approach that educates rather than punishes children
  • open, transparent communications
  • daily recess, scheduled outdoor time
  • curriculum that is a good fit for individual child’s needs
  • small class size and low student –teacher ratio
  • parent/grandparent involvement
