Meet the alumni of awakening seed school

Age: 26 | Location: Tempe, AZ

I graduated high school in 2012 from Horizon Honors School, and later Arizona State University in 2016 with a BA in Film and Media Production. Film is currently what matters most to me, as well as what makes me the happiest, whether watching movies or making them, and I have the intention of saving up enough money to pursue filmmaking as a job full time. Attending the Seed as a child played a large part in shaping the person I am today, as I learned the importance of empathy, bonding with others, and being open and willing to try new things.

Age: 25  |  Location:  Flagstaff, AZ

I went to the Seed from PreK to 3rd grade until we moved to Flagstaff. The years I spent there were the best years of my childhood by far. The experiences from this school will truly stick with me for the rest of my life. From our individual unique outdoor areas to whole school or class projects like building the fish pond and playground equipment, I can honestly forever say this is the best school. I would never trade my time at Awakening Seed for anything.  I graduated in 2011 from Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy with an outstanding art award. After high school, I attended community college in Scottsdale, then moved back to Flagstaff and continued courses at the community college there.  I own my own business and have a 2 year old son.  I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am without the foundation that Awakening Seed gave me. I was a small seed that Mary and all of my teachers and friends helped grow into the flower I am today and the tree I will become in the future.
Age: 37 |  Location: Scottsdale, AZ
I have recently moved back to Arizona after a brief stretch in Austin, Texas where I worked for a museum exhibit company and frequently traveled to the Middle East. I have spent most of my life in the Phoenix area and graduated from McClintock High School. I also graduated from Arizona State University with a BS in Sustainability and an MS in Information Management. While I appreciate the efficiencies and productivity of the working world, this is tempered by my appreciation for social justice and stewardship. I have a strong belief in volunteering and participated with Local to Global Justice at ASU and with Foundation Communities in Austin. I can credit the Awakening Seed for helping to provide me with a balanced outlook, a desire to help others, and a respect for systems that benefit people as well as the environment.  My daughter is a current Seed student.
Age:  18 | Location: Tempe, AZ
Right now I am a senior at Arizona School for the Arts, I will graduate in June 2018 and will be attending Arizona State University as an Engineering Major in the fall. I am considering a minor or double major in Industrial Design as I have been very interested in 3D printing since I was about 12 years old. I am in many choirs including Arizona All State Choir, and the Phoenix Children’s Chorus with which I will be going on tour to Australia this summer to sing at the Sydney Opera House. I think the Seed made me more free-spirited and it allowed me to discover who I was early on. You got to know yourself without judgement. I think about Rocksaboxen and how I got to be an entrepreneur at an early age! With the Seed’s free-spirit embrace of art and individuals, I think I became more creative as a person. I am very involved in music, design/engineering, photography all which I enjoy.

After graduating from the Seed, I went on to attend high school at Arizona School for the Arts. I later graduated cum laude from Wellesley College in Boston with a focus in biology and anthropology, and also participated in NCAA varsity athletics, serving as captain of the fencing team for three years. I returned to the Valley and began yet another engineering degree at Arizona State University while also fostering a passion for science communication.   As a science communicator, I worked with the Arizona Science Center as a Content Specialist, teaching people of all ages and occasionally exploding things in public – for science of course! I also currently work as a scientific consultant for authors and creatives, and conduct research through ASU to improve access to scientific resources in rural and under-served communities throughout the state of Arizona.  Most recently, I wrapped as Associate Science Producer on seasons 2 and 3 of Bill Nye Saves the World.  When not playing mad scientist, I am an avid crocheter, as well as a student and instructor of Historical European Martial Arts.
There is no question in my mind that my time at the Seed helped teach me how to live outside the box, and has helped me find new ways to reach all kinds of people. I am forever grateful for the lessons I learned at the Seed, and try to keep a little of that alive in everything I do.

Age: 27 | Location:  Eugene, OR

Since my time at the Seed, I have earned a high school diploma from Arizona School for the Arts, a BA with concentrations in music and literature from Sarah Lawrence College, and a Master of Music degree in Music Theory from the University of Colorado-Boulder. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Music Theory, with a supporting area in Harpsichord Performance, at the University of Oregon. I am also a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the university, teaching students and assisting faculty with courses in the first and second years of the music theory curriculum.

The Seed taught me to love learning! My time there also taught me the importance of finding and creating communities that foster dialogue and discovery, and that learning is, by its very nature, a collaborative enterprise. I will never forget the hours we spent in the garden, each student contributing to and caring for the community we built together. I hold those memories close as my students and I build our own communities together, term by term.

Age:  33  |  Location:  Chandler, AZ

I live with my husband, Josh, and daughter, Elise.  I graduated from Arizona State in 2004 with a B.S. in finance and in 2011 with an M.B.A. with a specialization in international business. I currently work in Tempe in business development finance helping my company set pricing and negotiate business terms in our contracts.  Awakening Seed had a great impact on my life and my career by instilling in me a compassion for others and acceptance for others who are different from myself.  It has helped me to work with others and understand people’s differences as we work together on projects and goals.  On a personal level, it started an early love of other cultures, travel and education which continue to be things I love to experience with my family and friends. In addition to travel, I enjoy cooking, reading and supporting ASU football and basketball.

Michael Sommer  Age: 33  |  Location: Tempe, AZ.

I graduated from Tempe High, then attended San Diego City College. I am the owner of V2A Fitness (visualization to action), a personal training company and am passionate about helping coach and inspire as many people as possible to reach their goals regarding fitness and overall wellness. My son Hayden is my everything. Going on new exciting adventures with him is my favorite thing to do. Surfing, rock climbing, reading & spending time with my son make me the happiest. The Seed cultivated my creative spark and taught me compassion and how to truly be kind to the people in my life.

Age:  17 | Location:  Phoenix, AZ

I just finished my junior year at Higley High School. The most important thing that Awakening Seed brought to me is friendships. I met a lot of friends the first year I attended the Seed at age 18 months. I was part of the first toddler class that my mom, Sarah Balluff, taught with Kerri Tornow. I am still friends with them. I also learned to respect others and the planet. My favorite event was the the Halloween carnival. It was fun to dress up and try to win a cake in the cake walk. I also loved the in-school camp out. The teachers are open-hearted and they made me feel like I was important. I’m not sure what is in my future but I know I’ll do great things because of the lessons I learned at the Seed.

Age:  48 | Location:  Mesa, AZ

I’ve been a part of Awakening Seed from its inception. My mother, Mary Glover, started the school in our home garage and it quickly grew. Almost forty years later, I am still a part of the Seed. I taught at the school for eleven years and have been working in the office for the past three years. There were so many meaningful experiences I had as a student. I learned to write stories and turn them into bound books. Because we were able to participate in hands-on learning, our experiences were meaningful and that sparked our creativity for storytelling. Some of my best memories are the time we took the city bus to downtown Phoenix and went to the top of the Hyatt Regency, the time we learned about, built, and set off a volcano (with real gun powder and no one got hurt!), and the time we taped 5 X 7 note cards covered with Vaseline onto the curbs in the neighborhood to investigate the pollution that cars emit when driving down the streets. These lessons sparked an interest in travel, nature, and environmental awareness. Because of this experience, I have continued to enjoy learning.

Age:  24 | Location:  Phoenix, AZ

I graduated from Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center. I also attended South Mountain Community College and received my Associates in Arts. In December 2018 I graduated from  Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ, with a Bachelor of Science in Parks and Recreation Management, with the intention of becoming an interpretive park ranger. My plan is to start working with the National Park Service after graduation. I am hopeful that I can work at a national park and start my career in saving these special places.
The things that make me happy are being outdoors and exploring new places. I also like sailing, rock climbing, kayaking and backpacking. The Seed influenced how I am today by teaching me how to be a kind person to our planet and to people in everyday life. It also showed me a different way to influence people to care for natural spaces by education and interpretation.  Thank you, Seed.

Age: 24 | Location:  Tempe, AZ

I went to high school at McClintock High School in Tempe, played varsity basketball and volleyball, and graduated with a 3.8 GPA. I found an interest in design and architecture through elective classes in high school and decided to pursue a degree in a similar field. Following my parents’ footsteps, I attended Arizona State University and was accepted into the School of Design for the Visual Communications program. While attending ASU, I worked 30-35 hours a week at Harkins Theatres as a manager, saved up my money, and bought my first property, a condo near the ASU campus. After graduating from The Design School with a Bachelor’s of Science in Visual Communications, I began my career as a graphic designer at G/O Digital, a local digital marketing company in downtown Phoenix. I sold my condo and upgraded to a single family home in Tempe. I then took a designer position at Defero, a local agency in Scottsdale, where I am currently the senior designer, and now work alongside fellow Awakening Seed graduate, Tinsley Andrews.

In my free time I like hanging with my family and friends, trying new restaurants, and watching local Arizona sports teams. Aside from the basics like math, writing, reading, and science, The Seed helped pave a path in my life by letting me find myself and figure out what my passions were. I quickly grew fond of sports and art with all of the structured activities within our class. The Seed also showed me how to interact with people, be courteous, and problem solve in real life situations. At the time it may not have seemed like I was learning those interpersonal skills, but that is what I take away from growing up at the Seed the most. Speaking, acting respectfully, and learning how to problem solve in and out of a book has helped me immensely in moving up the chain at Harkins Theatres through high school and college, and now furthering my career in the design field.  I still stay in contact with fellow Seed graduates and have great memories of my time there. I couldn’t have picked a better school to grow up in.

Age: 28 | Oakland, CA
After leaving the Seed I went to school in the Tempe Elementary District and attended McClintock High School (Payne Academy). After high school I went to the University of San Diego and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2009. I am currently a special assistant to the head coach and manager of advance scouting for the Golden State Warriors, 2015 NBA champions. Being around people working toward and being a part of something greater than themselves matters and brings happiness to me, along with traveling and gathering. The Seed has a tremendous influence on their students’ ability to interact with, care for, and treat others as equals. It generates a curiosity in learning and about the world as a whole. They make their students feel valuable and capable of anything their minds can dream of. These things molded who I am and my approach to the world today.

Age: 32 | Santa Monica, CA

I live and work in Santa Monica, working in Advertising Sales at Google. I attended Awakening Seed during my most impressionable years (Kindergarten – 3rd grade) and I credit the Seed for so many of my successes in life. The Seed inspired me to dream big, to be curious, and to treat everyone equally. These three traits enabled me to go away to college at The University of Texas – Austin, travel the world (visited over twenty countries across five continents), live in New York City for 6+ years, and get hired at reputable companies like NBC, Microsoft, and now Google. Even though it has been over twenty years since I walked the halls of the Awakening Seed, I think often of the amazing teachers/mentors, the peace pole, the hikes up A-Mountain, Halloween, and so many wonderful memories I made there. It brings a huge smile to my face.

Age: 29 | San Francisco, CA

I attended the Awakening Seed from (I think) 1991-1993. I work for Industrial Light and Magic, the visual effects studio under Lucasfilm. After leaving the Awakening Seed, I finished elementary and middle school in the Madison School District and went to high school at North High. In 2004, I left the desert for the Bay Area and attended college at UC Berkeley. I finished my degree in electrical engineering and computer science in 2008. In the process I developed a passion for computer graphics and visual effects, which lead me to my current job at ILM, where I’ve been for 4 1/2 years. The Seed taught me early on how important it is to be curious and hungry for knowledge. I discovered a love for learning there that has stuck with me to this day. I try to set aside time in my life to pursue new skills on a regular basis. I think my love for reading and writing began at the Seed, too. While I don’t write as much as I’d like to anymore, I still read as often as I can. All in all, my time at the Seed gave me a fantastic foundation for the rest of my education and my life.

Age: 36 | Location: Pagosa Springs, CO

I am living in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, where I’m a family medicine physician. I grew up and went to college in Tempe. After graduating from ASU, I married my college girlfriend and together we traveled through almost twenty countries with our backpacks. We came back to the States and I decided to pursue medicine. I finished valedictorian of my medical school class at Midwestern University, and now spend my time focusing on the things that are important to me: my work as a doctor, my relationships as a husband and father, and my free time spent enjoying the nature that surrounds us here in Colorado. I came out of the Seed with a greater sense of what it means to take on another person’s perspective – to consider what it’s like to walk in someone else’s shoes. I also have a greater respect for the Earth, for the nature around us. I remember everything about the Seed. I remember all the kids I went to school with, all the teachers. My closest friends to this day went there. Pretty amazing, really.

Age: 19 | Irvine, CA

I am currently attending Concordia University Irvine located in Irvine, California. I have just completed my sophomore year and I am studying business administration with an emphasis on management. I plan to graduate in 2018. I am also a member of the Concordia swim team and have just finished my second year as a collegiate athlete. Moving out of state to attend college has really taught me what is most important in my life and what I value most. Family and friends are a huge part of my life and are truly all that matters to me. I receive great support from each and every family member at home and have extremely loving and supportive friends who keep me focused and motivated in all that I do. Academics and athletics are currently the main focus of my life as I work towards receiving a college degree, as well as being a supportive and friendly teammate to my entire team. The Seed greatly influenced the person I am today in a few ways. I believe I have a very positive outlook on life and always try to see the best in every person I meet and I have the Seed to thank for that. I learned from my time there to accept all people and embrace every individual’s uniqueness. Also I believe the Seed had a great influence on helping me discover who I am. The Seed taught me a lot about loving myself and embracing my strengths while also learning from my weaknesses, which still helps me in my life decisions today. I am very thankful to have attended the Seed from kindergarten to 4th grade and believe it has strengthened me and built me into the individual I am today.

Age: 35 | Phoenix, AZ

I’m a senior manager at a specialty pharmacy. Our team manages and mitigates complaints from patients, prescribers and clients. I graduated the AP track at McClintock High School in 1999. I then went on to graduate from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Biochemical). I achieved a couple certificates from Stanford after that in subjects of product creation and project management. What makes me happy is quality time with my family. I also relish moments to read, exercise and create—food, art work, writing. The Seed greatly influenced who I am today. It fostered an environment for us to be children in and uplifted each of us as unique beings. I learned the value of creative play, curiosity, community, mutual respect, nature and culture, all of which stayed with me. One specific example is that I still use a visualization technique I first learned from our Aikido sensei at the Seed when he was teaching us basketball. I don’t use it for basketball any longer, but it applies to any challenge in life. When I was too old to attend the Seed, I started public school and, while the transition was abrasive, I flourished academically due to a curiosity and love of learning that was nurtured by the Seed.

Age: 17 | Phoenix, AZ

I am currently a junior at Xavier College Prep and I will be graduating in 2017. My entire life I have played soccer. I eat, breathe, sleep soccer and I’m planning on doing it in college. Soccer is what makes me happy. I play on my high school varsity team and have been on my club team for nine years. When I was younger, I struggled with anxiety. Soccer was my only way to “forget” about my irrational fears. When I attended the Seed, everything changed for me. The encouragement and the support of the teachers helped me understand what my anxiety can do for me, how I can make it into something good. I specifically remember sitting down with Mary and writing a poem for our class poetry book. We edited and proofed it and she made me feel like I was writing a poem for a book that would be published and sold worldwide. She made me feel needed and wanted, and as a 4th grader with severe anxiety, that was very important to me. Mary was not the only one who helped me, and I am just so thankful for what the Seed has done for me. I am glad I’ve gotten the opportunity to share it with everyone else.

Age 37 | San Francisco, CA

I live in San Francisco with my husband, John, and my daughter, Eliana. I run a small business from home where I provide creative and financial services for the owners of small businesses such as restaurants, salons, hotels and boutiques. The work I do includes web design, writing, bookkeeping and coaching management teams. I love what I do and mostly the people I work for, who are longtime friends and colleagues. I find my biggest assets have been being reliable, hard working and nice. I graduated with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Communication Design from Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. Since then I have lived many places, including Seattle, Paris and New York. I have worked hard and have been fortunate to follow my dreams. I believe life is an adventure and I’m happiest when I’m on the brink of discovering something new. I was fortunate enough to have been a part of one of Awakening Seed’s earliest classes. I started when I was three years old and continued through 3rd grade, a total of six years. It was during these years at Awakening Seed that my creativity and bravery were fostered and encouraged. I learned how to write using my unique voice, directed plays, and illustrated books. I researched complicated science questions and demonstrated them in shoebox dioramas. I learned how to be a part of the group and, most importantly, that what I did mattered to the world that I was becoming a part of.

Age 27 | Location: Los Angeles, CA

I am 27 years old and currently living in LA. In 2015, I completed my PhD in Neuroscience at Caltech and began working as a researcher at an asset management firm. I am passionate about science and science communication and am part of a SciComm group called the Nerd Brigade, which works to get people asking questions and learning about the world around them. I graduated from the Seed in 2000. The Seed inspired my life-long love of science and taught me that anyone can be a scientist, a lesson I hope to pass on to everyone I meet.

Age: 21 | Location: Boston, MA

After graduating from Arizona School for the Arts I started studying French and Spanish at Middlebury College until transferring to Berklee College of Music, where I’m now studying music production and engineering and jazz composition. Right now everything I do is centered around music, my relationships with other artists in the area, and creating a family for myself in this new space! Every time I meet someone new I find myself sharing an anecdote from the times at the Seed. Anyone who knows me well knows of my history there and it’s been incredible to look at how, through those relationships, the Seed has become an extension of their stories, too. I think I’m still coming to realize how instrumental those experiences were/are in my choice to transfer, in my attitude towards friendship, and in seeking out opportunities to learn and experiment. I haven’t been in a better place in my life and I owe it entirely to what I was taught at Awakening Seed. Though it’s difficult to fully express, I couldn’t be more grateful to have such a meaningful reminder of the things that make me happy every day!

Age: 30 | Location: Florence, IT and Phoenix, AZ
I’m currently an art historian, Italian culturalist and writer living in Florence. I grad uated from Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, Arizona. In 2006 I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Italian Language and Literature, Communication (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Rhode Island and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art History from Lorenzo de Medici Istituto (Florence, Italy)in 2010. In 2012 I earned a Master of Arts in Art History from Arizona State University.

It is difficult for me to put into words exactly how much Awakening Seed has influenced my life. I went to public school for one year (kindergarten) before my mom removed me from public school and enrolled me at the Seed. My first year in public school was difficult; I didn’t fit in with the other kids, having already learned much of what we were learning in class and because I am, and even then was, a very free spirit. I cried every day when my poor mom dropped me off and finally out of her desperation to find a place where I would belong and be treated as an individual, my mother found the Seed. At the Seed, I was finally praised for my differences. My creativity, originality and desire to learn were rewarded instead of punished. The other students didn’t tease me. There were no bullies. I learned to accept my individuality, value my self worth and express myself because of my time there. Additionally, the Seed set me up for success from an early age, because they allowed me to explore and develop my natural interests and talents. Currently, I split my time between Florence, Italy where I truly do what I love – art history, Italian language/culture and writing, and Phoenix, Arizona. I know unequivocally that I would not have had the drive, determination or fearlessness to get to where I am today, without my early formative years at the Seed.

Age: 26 | Location: Phoenix, AZ

I attended Awakening Seed School from 2000 – 2004 for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. Afterwards, I made my way to public middle and high schools and eventually ventured off to Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. I finished my 15-year swimming career at the university, attaining multiple NCAA national championships and All-American awards. I majored in advertising and public relations, and loved every minute of my college experience. However, I missed the sunshine and hated the snow, so I moved back to Phoenix upon graduation where I worked at a digital marketing agency for three years. In December 2017, I began a new career as a marketing coordinator for the Arizona Community Foundation, an organization that provides high-impact giving opportunities for donors, major funding for students and nonprofits, and is a leader on key community issues. I’m beyond fortunate to work at a place that impacts the lives of Arizona residents every day. Among other influences in my life, Awakening Seed School instilled integrity and service into my DNA and I try to carry these traits in my professional and personal lives. I am currently serving my 3rd year as a member of the Board of Directors for Awakening Seed School.
