There was a great deal of excitement on the playground this week, as we witnessed the installation of our new shade structures. One fully covers the basketball court (particularly during lunch recess when we need it most!), and the other shades part of the big sand circle. The shade structures are a welcome addition to our playground, especially with the increasing number of hotter days. While we can’t change the weather patterns influenced by climate change, we can implement ways to keep our students more protected from the sun.
We’re also excited to have the shade structure on the basketball court available for school events, such as our annual tie-dye day in late September. It will enhance the experiences of our community by providing extra shaded space on the playground.
Our new shade structures are phase one of the upgrades we plan to do in the coming year or so. The second phase will be to replace the current shade system that surrounds the building, which includes individual outdoor classrooms and the toddler playground. When we come to that point, we’ll be launching a fundraising campaign, similar to the one we did a few years ago to replace our climbing structure. We’ll definitely need to rely on our community of current and alumni families to make this happen.
As our summer program comes to an end, we’re pleased to have made it through another successful summer camp. It’s been a delight to introduce the Seed to many of the new students who will be attending in the fall and equally enjoyable to have several alumni students with us this summer as students or interns. We look forward to concluding our summer program by attending the 2nd-6th graders’ 34th Way-off Broadway Performance on Friday, and wish you all a relaxing and rejuvenating summer break. We will take the next two weeks to clean carpets, paint the new exterior doors for two classrooms, move the 1st/2nd grade class back to their regular room, deep clean, shift sand around on the playground, and prepare for our upcoming school year, which will be our 49th. I look forward to what arises next.
