Most years as we enter the holiday season, we set up a community service project. Some years we’ve collected toys or jackets, but more recently we’ve decided on gathering non-perishable food. Approaching the holiday season this year, more people than usual are facing food shortages. Food pantries have carried the huge burden of filling in the gaps for people experiencing food instability. For this reason, the Seed will begin collecting non-perishable items in the next few weeks.
We’ll be supporting St. Mary’s Food Bank that serves the greater Phoenix area. Until November 25th, the food drive will be set up as a friendly classroom competition, with each class keeping track of their collection in their own room. A soon-to-be-announced prize will be given to the winning group.
Items needed are:
- canned protein (tuna, chicken, beans, chilo)
- peanut butter or other nut butters
- canned vegetables
- fruits (low sugar in juice or light syrup)
- pasta, rice, or boxed meals
- cereal, oatmeal, breakfast bars
- canned soups and stews
If you’d prefer to make a monetary donation to St. Mary’s Food Bank, you can go to this link. Any donations made this way will be completely tax deductible.
Thanks ahead of time for participating in this worthwhile community service project. It’s a wonderful way to teach children that there are people in the world with food insecurity, and that we can help by giving what we can to support them.
